The Silver Queen Hotel in Virginia City, Nevada brings together Comstock history, the legend of Rosie in Room 11 and an original LiveSciFi investigation. Behind its C Street frontage are a historic saloon, upper-floor corridors and the rooms that have drawn guests and ghost hunters for generations.
My connection to this hotel goes beyond the story of Rosie. In 2011, I stayed here with five other people during a visit that included loud disturbances from the adjoining room, a conversation with a man my friends believed was dead, and a housekeeper’s account of a room kept locked after a guest’s death. Years later, our Demon Files investigation recorded another intense night inside the Silver Queen. These are separate experiences, and both deserve to be told with their original context.

History of the Silver Queen Hotel
The Silver Queen dates to 1876, in the Comstock mining era. Its setting on historic C Street places it among Virginia City’s hotels, saloons and businesses that grew around the silver boom. The Nevada tourism office’s Silver Queen guide describes its restored rooms and historic saloon.
The hotel’s best-known display is the towering Silver Queen portrait, with 3,261 silver dollars incorporated into the woman’s dress. The portrait connects the venue’s name with the mineral wealth that shaped Virginia City. For visitors, the saloon and upper floors offer different views of the property: a public gathering place below and quieter hotel corridors above.
Ghost Stories and Paranormal Activity
Rosie and Room 11
Rosie is the Silver Queen’s best-known ghost story: a woman said to haunt Room 11 and its bathtub. But Rosie has not been historically identified as a woman who lived or died in Room 11. No contemporary newspaper report, death record or other archival document establishing that identity or the bathtub story has been produced for this article.
Room 11 remains central to the hotel’s haunting tradition. Our investigation approached that story through the experiences reported inside the room, while keeping the search for Rosie’s historical identity separate.
The episode includes Lily’s impressions of a woman in the bathing area and a separate male presence near the doorway. Those are her reported psychic impressions from that night, rather than historical sources confirming Rosie’s identity.
Footsteps, Voices and the Upper Floors
Guests have also described footsteps, rattling doorknobs and voices. These recurring accounts help explain why investigators return to the Silver Queen. Our photographs below show the second- and third-floor interiors of this property.

Our 2011 Encounter with a Man from a Locked Room
In 2011, I visited the Silver Queen with five other people. The night before the encounter, I could not sleep because of the noise from the room next to mine. It sounded as though furniture was being thrown around. At the time, I understood it as a disturbance coming from an occupied room.
The next day, friends in our group spoke with a man who had what they described as an Australian accent. During that conversation, they noticed a strong odor they associated with a dead person. When he said goodbye, he went into the room next to mine—the same room from which I had heard the disturbance.
Immediately after speaking with him, one of my friends said she believed she had just spoken to a dead person. Something about the exchange had felt wrong to her before we heard the housekeeper’s explanation. That immediate reaction is an important part of the account; it was not an interpretation added only after learning about a death.
What the Housekeeper Told Us
Later that day, housekeeping told us that the room had been kept locked for some time following a suicide. The housekeeper described the deceased guest as a man from New Zealand. Staff opened the room for me, and I saw no signs that anyone was staying there.
For us, the disturbing sequence was the combination: the overnight noise, the apparently ordinary conversation, the smell my friends described, the man entering the adjoining room, and then being told that the room had remained locked after a death. I regard this as one of my most significant personal experiences at the Silver Queen. My account of the conversation comes from the friends who spoke with him; the noise and the room inspection were my own experiences.
The Newspaper Record: A Death in January 2010
A contemporary newspaper report provides a documented part of the hotel’s history. The Comstock Chronicle published “VC death ruled a suicide” on January 22, 2010. It identifies Geoffrey Welch, 48, a New Zealand citizen, and reports that housekeeping discovered his body at the Silver Queen on January 13, 2010. The report cites Assistant Sheriff Gerald Antinoro and states that the New Zealand Consulate was notified.
The date needs to remain clear: our encounter was in 2011; the documented death occurred in 2010. The report does not identify a room number, describe our encounter or establish the identity of the man my friends spoke with. It supplies a contemporary record of a New Zealand guest’s death at the hotel, alongside the separate account of what our group experienced.
The article is preserved in NewsLibrary’s Comstock Chronicle archive, record 1474947979.
LiveSciFi’s Silver Queen Investigation
During our later investigation for The Demon Files, Lily and I explored the Room 11 haunting through psychic impressions, recorder sessions and a bathtub sensory experiment. The recording captures our questions, the sounds we reviewed, our immediate reactions and my account of a physical experience during the experiment. The 2011 encounter described above happened on a separate visit.
Paranormal Moments from the Original Episode
Select a timestamp to open the original LiveSciFi episode at that point. The descriptions distinguish recorded sounds, personal experiences and psychic impressions.
3:30 — Lily describes a pale woman in the bathtub
Lily says she senses someone thin and pale in the tub, then describes a female presence reluctant to leave the bathing area. The sequence follows her psychic impressions and the conversation they prompted.
4:43 — A male presence described at the doorway
Lily describes a large man near the doorway, wearing a brown hat. As the discussion continues, she describes a vest and slacks and says she believes he frightens people in the room. This is a separate impression from the woman in the bathtub.
11:19 — Recorder playback: the heaven-or-hell question
During playback, the discussion turns to whether the presence is in heaven or hell. At 11:46, Tim says he thinks he heard “heaven.” That wording is Tim’s interpretation of the recording, presented with the surrounding question so listeners can compare it with what they hear.
14:05 — A scream and Lily’s description of a crawling figure
After discussing a sound resembling a scream, Lily describes sensing something black and humanlike that she compares to a spider, with long limbs, crawling near the ceiling. The sequence preserves Lily’s description and the team’s reaction to the preceding sound.
15:17 — Scream playback after a direct invitation to the recorder
The episode replays the invitation for a presence or shadow figure to make itself known and speak into the recorder. A scream-like sound follows at about 15:32. Tim reacts with fear and reports feeling heat on him; a further replay begins around 16:27. The sequence preserves the request, the sound and our immediate reactions together.
20:10 — Playback from a recorder left in the room
We return to review a recorder session and react strongly to what we hear. In the following room check, we say nobody is inside and that the fan is off. The sequence includes the playback and the explanation of the conditions we checked.
39:21 — Nausea during the bathtub experiment
During the sensory experiment, I report feeling sick and say I feel as though I am going to throw up. The team checks on me and helps end the session. Soon afterward, I report feeling very hot; another participant says I am sweating and feel hot to the touch.
41:45 — Tim describes a marionette sensation and loss of arm control
After leaving the bathtub, I describe feeling like a marionette and having no control over my arms or hands, as though something were pulling them. I also describe the water feeling unusually thick and the nausea that made me want to stop. This is my recorded firsthand account of the physical experience.
Is It True? The History, Accounts and Investigation
The Silver Queen’s history includes a documented death and several different strands of haunting accounts. They should be read in their own context: the Room 11 legend, our group’s 2011 encounter and the later experiences recorded for The Demon Files.
Rosie: no historical document presented here establishes that a woman called Rosie died in the Room 11 bathtub. The legend is part of the hotel’s haunting tradition, and Lily’s impressions are part of our investigation, but neither supplies a verified biography.
The New Zealand guest: the January 2010 newspaper report documents Geoffrey Welch’s death at the Silver Queen. Our 2011 account adds the disturbance I heard, my friends’ conversation with the man, their immediate reaction and the housekeeper’s explanation. The newspaper and the encounter are separate sources; the report does not identify an apparition or place Welch in Room 11.
Our recorded investigation: the episode preserves the scream playback, the team’s responses, Lily’s perceptions and my account of the bathtub experience. These specific moments are the core of LiveSciFi’s reporting from the hotel. Readers can hear the questions and playback and watch how the experience affected us.
