EMF & REM-Pod: Meter Readings and Device Interactions

125 indexed moments

EMF meters and REM-Pods are two of the most common pieces of ghost hunting equipment. An EMF meter measures changes in the electromagnetic field around it, and a REM-Pod lights up and sounds an alarm when something comes close to its antenna. Investigators use both to ask spirits for a response they can see and hear. Below, we explain how each device works, how investigators use them, what can set them off, and the EMF and REM-Pod activity recorded during LiveSciFi investigations, so you can watch each moment and judge it yourself.

What Is an EMF Meter?

An EMF meter measures electromagnetic fields, usually in milligauss. In ghost hunting, the most familiar model is the K-II, which uses a row of colored lights from green to red. The theory is that spirits either give off energy or draw on it to manifest, so an unexplained spike may mean a presence. Investigators often ask a spirit to "light up the meter" as a yes.

What Is a REM-Pod?

A REM-Pod, short for radiating electromagnetic pod, creates its own small electromagnetic field around a telescopic antenna. When something conductive, like a hand, disturbs that field, the pod's lights and alarm go off. Unlike an EMF meter, it isn't measuring the room. It's waiting for something to come close. Many models also track temperature changes. Investigators often place REM-Pods in empty rooms, on stairs or beside haunted objects, and ask for them to be touched.

How Investigators Use EMF Meters and REM-Pods

  1. Take a baseline sweep of the room to find wiring, appliances and other normal sources.
  2. Keep phones, radios and cameras away from the devices, or in airplane mode.
  3. Place REM-Pods on a stable surface away from where people walk.
  4. Ask for responses one question at a time, and note the time of every activation.
  5. After a hit, check for a cause, such as a person moving nearby, a draft or a cable.

What Can Set Off an EMF Meter or REM-Pod?

There's no scientific proof that spirits affect electromagnetic fields. Everyday causes include:

  • Electrical wiring, breaker boxes and appliances, which give steady high readings.
  • Phones and radios, which cause sudden spikes when they send or receive.
  • People, pets and insects close to a REM-Pod antenna.
  • Low batteries and faulty units, which can trigger false alarms.

Some researchers have suggested high EMF levels in old buildings may make people feel uneasy or watched. Our approach is to note nearby sources on camera, test devices before trusting them, and keep sessions running so viewers can see what happened before each hit.

EMF and REM-Pod FAQ

What is a normal EMF reading in a house?

Away from appliances and wiring, most homes read below 1 to 2 milligauss. Readings can be much higher next to breaker boxes, microwaves and power cords, which is why investigators take a baseline before a session.

Can a REM-Pod go off by itself?

Yes. Low batteries, a faulty unit, a nearby phone, or a person or pet close to the antenna can all trigger one. That's why investigators test the pod and watch what's around it before treating an alarm as evidence.

Do ghost hunting apps work like an EMF meter?

Phone apps use the phone's compass sensor, which detects magnetic fields from metal and electronics, so they react to your surroundings rather than measuring the way a dedicated meter does. See our article on ghost hunting apps.
