The Sallie House is one of the most haunted houses in America. The house is located at 508 North Second Street in Atchison Kansas. The haunting has been featured on TV shows: Sightings, Ghost Adventures, Paranormal Witness, and A Haunting.  Unfortunately, many tourists and paranormal groups visit the home every year unaware of the demon that inhabits its walls.

Sallie House History

The historical timeline of the house is typical and does not reveal any tragic events that could trigger a haunting of this magnitude.  The house was built for Michael Finney in 1867. The Finney family lived there on and off until 1947.

Four deaths are confirmed under natural causes:

1. M C Finney 1872,
2. Charles James Kathrens (father of Kate Finney), 1874
3. Richard Edwin Finney, 1874
4. Agnes Finney, 1939

After the Finney’s left the property the house was owned and rented by various people.

The story of the hauntings began when Tony and Debra Pickman rented the home in 1992. Pickman’s claim that paranormal activity in the home began slowly, with objects moving in their child’s room, lights going on and off, and eventually a visitation by a ghostly girl.

As time passed, Tony Pickman became the focus of a violent haunting, with the ghost scratching his body, causing nightmares, and later demonic oppression. In an attempt to get help from the haunting, they invited numerous psychics to the house and appeared on the TV show Sightings.

In one episode psychic Peter James concludes that a ghost named “Sallie” was responsible for the haunting. James believed that “Sallie” died from acute appendicitis at the hands of Dr. Charles Finney. The Pickman’s lived at the house for several more years before finally moving out.

Tony later claimed that the demonic forces in the house once affected him so badly he wanted to kill his wife.

There were no past claims of demonic paranormal activity at the property.

Possible Causes for the Hauntings at the Sallie House

The Pentagram – Summoning a Demon

The Pickman’s were not the only ones to live in the house, another tenant moved in shortly after them. This tenant placed a pentagram in the basement, which was later discovered by the owner, Les Smith. The tenant was then evicted and the pentagram was spray painted over with black paint.

Today, if you look closely, you can still see the black paint on the basement floor. It is believed that the tenant was trying to summon the demon Beezlebub when they placed the pentagram. People have also reported that another paranormal group conducted a ritual in an attempt to close the previous one.

The Bloody Sweater – The Scene of a crime?

Back in 2011 we discovered a sweater that was covered in blood at the house. Could this blood-soaked sweater be the cause of the hauntings at the Sallie House? What was really strange about this discovery was that the sweater was accidentally found in the attic of the house underneath the insulation.

Subsequent luminol tests that we conducted would reveal that the sweater and the closet did have blood on them.  Weeks before the investigation of the house Tim Wood had a dream where he was sitting in the living room with a boy.

The boy walked me up the stairs and brought me to the master bedroom closet. Shortly after that in my dream I saw the boy wearing a blue sweater, chained to the pipe, and bleeding out from several stab wounds. Could this be a premonition of something that occurred in the house, or could it be just a sweater that was used as a rag?

The master bedroom closet has been a hotbed of activity for many paranormal investigators in the past, with unexplained noises, feeling of dizziness, and physical attacks occurring there.  In the documentary psychic Robbie Thomas, described the closet as a portal for paranormal activity.  Could it be that he was possibly picking up on the energy from the sweater?

Some of the key characteristics of this sweater are:

• Brand – Sears and Robuck, the label shows that the sweater was made from 1970 to 1996.
• Puncture holes in the front and back of the sweater
• Blood stains are more concentrated in the lower stomach region of the sweater, back, and front
• Bloodstain on the right elbow

Could this be from the little boy ghost that multiple eyewitnesses have seen, and captured EVPs from?

Due to the fact that we found the sweater we thought it would be a good idea to test not only the sweater but the master bedroom closet for the presence of blood. Could the bloody sweater be the cause for the Sallie House haunting?

Sallie House Luminol Photos

Luminol is a chemical that glows blue when mixed with an oxidizing agent. It is a white-to-pale-yellow solid that is soluble in most polar organic solvents, but insoluble in water. Forensic investigators use luminol to detect trace amounts of blood at crime scenes, as it reacts with the iron in hemoglobin.

Biologists use it in cellular assays to detect copper, iron, and cyanides, as well as specific proteins by western blot. When luminol is sprayed evenly across an area, trace amounts of an activating oxidant make the luminol emit a blue glow that can be seen in a darkened room. The glow only lasts about 30 seconds, but investigators can document the effect with a long-exposure photograph.

Types of Hauntings at the Sallie House

We have concluded that there is no single “hot spot” where the hauntings at the house are more likely to occur.  Any part of the house can be active at any time with unexplained phenomena.  The master bedroom and closet, Sallie’s room, staircase, living room, kitchen, and basement all can feature haunting activity.  Some of the types of hauntings that we have documented during our live paranormal investigations include:
